Delta, KLM Celebrate 15 years of Non-stop Trans-Atlantic Service to Memphis

Delta Airlines and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines joined Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority and key City, County and State officials on June 24 to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the first nonstop flight between Memphis International and Amsterdam Schiphol airports.

The event was a mixture of reminiscing about the first flight, named “Elvis One,” and recognition of the flight’s endurance through 15 years of global economic, environmental and geo-political challenges.

Various expressions of what the flight has meant to business development, tourism, travel convenience and efficiency were expressed by all the program speakers... more »

FedEx MEM Wins Prestigious International Award

FedEx Express has won the Institute of Transport Management’s “Best Global Cargo Hub” award for its Memphis World Hub.

The Memphis hub, the centerpiece of the FedEx global distribution system, was given the award as a shining example of delivery and distribution professionalism. The judging panel cited, in particular, its achievement of successfully uniting the disparate capabilities of the city of Memphis (road, rail, river and air) to create the linchpin of trade within the U.S... more »

Jack Sammons Joins Airport Board

Businessman and veteran public servant Jack Sammons has been appointed to the Airport’s Board of Commissioners.

Jack is president of Ampro Industries, Inc., the nation’s most successful ethnic hair gel manufacturing company, and serves as the national president of the Ethnic Product Manufacturers Association. A serial entrepreneur, in addition to his duties in the hair care industry, Jack is the sole general partner of The Sammons Company L.P., a Memphis-based employee benefits firm focused exclusively on marketing voluntary benefits... more »

Ground Transportation Options Growing

Ground Transportation Center: Construction on the new 7-level Ground Transportation Center (GTC) has been underway for five months and progressing well despite heavy spring rains as the project was getting underway. The project is ready to emerge out of the ground as approximately 90 percent of the underground work is complete. Below grade construction elements installed to date include rammed aggregate piers utilized to enhance the soil’s ability to support the load of the structure, underground electrical duct work and underground piping including a 6-foot diameter storm drain pipe which when paired with an existing one should improve storm water drainage... more »

Advantage Rent A Car: Advantage opened a Memphis International Airport rental location August 1, adding to the number of car rental choices for air travelers. Their shuttle van to the rental office can be boarded from the lower (middle) drive outside baggage claim A, B, or C. Look for the orange overhead sign with the Advantage name.

Rural Tennessee Bus Service: Anchor Trailways & Tours is now operating ATRunner, a daily bus service between Memphis International Airport and Nashville International Airport with rural west Tennessee stops in between including Atoka, Ripley, Dyersburg, Union City, Martin, Dresden, Paris, Camden, Holladay and Dickson... more »

NEW Concession for Your Electronics Needs

InMotion Entertainment has opened a store in the concourse “B” rotunda across from the food court. It offers a wide selection of popular portable electronic and entertainment products to meet travelers’ needs on the go. Products include digital cameras, DVD players, camcorders, mp3 players, gaming software and systems, netbooks, software, GPS navigation systems, the latest movies, music and electronic books. Accessories for these products, as well as cellphones, include headphones, cases, batteries, adapters, and power and storage devices. Movies can be purchased or rented and are available on disk or can be downloaded straight to your media player through their new PlayPoint interface.

Delta Adding First Class to Eight MEM Routes

Beginning this fall, air travelers will have the option of first class seating on eight more Delta routes from the Memphis hub. Flights to Boston; Denver; Baltimore/Washington; Newark, N.J.; New York/JFK; Philadelphia; Toronto; and McAllen, Texas will be upgraded from one class of service to two cabin service as part of a $1 billion system wide investment to improve the customer experience on the ground and in the air. The upgrades are being added to all of Delta’s domestic flights longer than 750 miles, or about two and one-half hours of flight time. First class service onboard these flights will be consistent with the amenities offered on Delta mainline flights – meals, china and linen service, pre-departure beverages and complimentary in-flight beverages.
