Memphis International Sees Increase in Security Requirements

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has expanded the use of Explosive Trace Detection (ETD) technology at airports nation-wide in order to provide additional security.

Passengers will see an increase in the random use of ETD technology at airports across the nation within security checkpoints, checkpoint queues and boarding areas. TSA officers will randomly swab passengers’ hands or luggage and then place the swab inside the ETD unit, which then analyzes the swab for potential explosive residue. Screening swabs are disposed of after each use for health purposes.

According to the TSA Acting Administrator Gale Rossides, ETD technology is a vital tool in the TSA’s mission to stay ahead of developing threats to aviation security, and the expansion of ETD technology at checkpoints and departure gates increases security’s ability to keep travelers safe…more »

Memphis #1 in Cargo Volume for
18th Consecutive Year

Memphis International Airport is the World’s Leader in Air Cargo volume for the 18th consecutive year according to preliminary figures released by Airports Council International, Geneva, Switzerland.

With 3,697,185 million metric tons handled in 2009, a .4% increase over 2008, Memphis widened its lead over #2 Hong Kong which had a 7.5% decrease to 3,385,313 million metric tons. More than 95% of Memphis’ volume can be attributed to FedEx, which flowed more of their shipments through Memphis last year improving their efficiency.

Memphis posted its gain in the midst of a global economic recession that peaked about mid-year and showed a dramatic drop in shipments particularly from Asia. Anticipating a strengthening economy, Memphis expects growth to improve this year.

Parking Improvements Underway

Due to construction on the new Consolidated Parking and Rental Car Facility, long-term parking lots A, B and C have been closed. During the construction, any overflow from the 3-level parking facility, located in front of the terminal buildings, can use the Economy-West lot or the new Economy-East lot, which is opening this summer.

The new 7-level consolidated parking and rental car facility is expected to be complete in 24 months. Once construction is complete, the new parking facility will provide 4,500 parking spaces at economy prices. Rental car companies will also move on-site to the first two levels of this new facility.
