Memphis Will Host 2009 North American Air Cargo Conference

Memphis International Airport will host the 2009 Airports Council International-North America Air Cargo Conference, March 10-12.

Approximately 150 people are expected to attend the conference, including airport directors, air cargo managers, CFOs, property managers, terminal developers, financial consultants, air cargo airline representatives, air cargo consultants, U.S. and Canadian freight forwarders and senior government and transportation officials.

The conference will kick-off with a two-part session on the State of the Industry. Other program topics will include the cargo policy landscape, critical issues facing the air cargo business and strategies to enhance air cargo revenues. Discussions will center on the impact of the economic change on this industry and why it is so important to build partnerships during this global economic turbulence. William J. Logue, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of FedEx Express will be the keynote speaker at the luncheon on Wednesday, March 11.

As part of the conference, FedEx will be offering tours of its facility at Memphis International Airport during its overnight package sorting operations on March 11 and March 12, from 11:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Additionally, Memphis International Airport, will offer attendees an airport tour, that will guide visitors through the new Cargo Central, UPS facility, and Tennessee Air National Guard.

According to preliminary figures, Memphis International Airport is the world’s busiest cargo airport for the 17th consecutive year. Approximately 3.7 million metric tons passed through the airport in 2008.


Delta Announces New Memphis Air Service

Starting in May, Delta Airlines will have new daily non-stop service between Memphis and Golden Triangle Regional Airport located midway between the Mississippi cities of Columbus, Starkville and West Point.

The twice-daily flights will begin May 4 and be flown by Northwest's Saab 340 aircraft with seating for up to 32 passengers. The new route will offer customers convenient access to this growing industrial region and additional connectivity through Delta's Memphis hub...(more)




New Vending Machine Helps Passengers Learn the Language of their Destinations

Passengers flying through Memphis International Airport can now purchase Rosetta Stone, an interactive foreign language learning software from one of the newly installed ZoomShops, an upscale vending machine that offers high-end branded consumer products. The machine is installed in Concourse B, near gate 1.

Rosetta Stone features Dynamic Immersion, which lets you live a language while learning it. Software for nine languages is offered from the machine including English, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese Chinese, German, Hebrew, Portuguese, Arabic, and Russian. Memphis International Airport's Security Ranked As One of the Best

Memphis International Airport was ranked as having one of the best security organizations in the Industry in a benchmarking survey conducted by Security Magazine.

For the first time, the 500 best security organizations were compared and ranked by industry. Memphis International's Police Department led by Chief Robert Vester was ranked 3rd in the Government: Ports & Terminals category.

The survey is based on data obtained through public resources and records, as well as data supplied by the organization. Its purpose is to provide a reliable database to measure your organization compared to others and create a benchmarking program among security organizations. The results will be the basis for an ongoing peer review process.

Among the areas evaluated were risk assessment, mitigation strategies, equipment and use of technology, personnel and training and program funding and budgets.



New Web site in the Works

Memphis International Airport is in the process of redesigning its Web site. The new Web site will be focused on the customer and will provide passengers with up-to-date information on traveling through Memphis International. The site will cover everything from going through security to traveling with children and even what to do if you are just connecting through Memphis. Passenger information will be broken down into four different sections for easy navigation: Flight Information; Passenger Information; Directions and Parking ,and Shop.Dine.Relax.

The business side of the Web site will not be forgotten. Companies wishing to do business with the Airport, or that need additional information on our Disadvantage Business programs will still be able to find that information in the Business Information and About Us pages.

The new Web site will be launched in May.




New FedEx Aircraft Hangar on the Rise

If you've driven down Winchester Road past the Airport lately, you may have seen a large steel structure going up on the north side of the airfield. The 132,000 square-foot structure is a new maintenance hangar for FedEx aircraft that will tower 150 ft tall. The new hangar will be able to accommodate a variety of aircraft. At one time it can easily accommodate two Boeing 777s nested or one Airbus 380; or two MD11s wing tip to wing tip; or one Boeing 777 and two Airbus A310s. In addition, a two-story, 70,000 square-foot office is being constructed between the existing maintenance hangar and the new hangar. The hangar is expected to be ready for occupancy in July.
