Larry Cox is Leading the Energy Task Force to Fight Rising Fuel Costs

Larry Cox, president and CEO of Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority has taken an active role in addressing the air service challenges caused by escalating fuel costs. Cox approached the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) with his concerns about the negative impact fuel costs are having on the financial viability of airlines and the Memphis economy, where one in four jobs are indirectly related to the Airport.

After meeting with Cox, AAAE has formed an energy task force which met for the first time on July 9 in Washington. Cox is an integral member of the team, as well as MSCAA chief financial officer Scott Brockman. At the July 9 meeting, the task force determined they must develop a position for AAAE to partner with other aviation industry groups and make consolidated recommendations for a national energy policy, a national air service policy and short term policies the government can pursue… more »

New Security Initiatives

The Transportation Security Administration has launched two new initiatives which will help streamline the security checkpoints and provide valuable feedback on the screening process. Starting August 16, passengers will be able to use checkpoint-friendly laptop bags. These special checkpoint-friendly bags will produce a clear and unobstructed image of the laptop when undergoing X-ray screening. Designs meeting this objective will enable TSA to allow laptops to remain in bags for screening. For additional information about the bags visit the TSA Web site.

The other initiative TSA has launched is the "Got Feedback?" program which enables passengers to submit comments directly to TSA stakeholder/customer service managers about their screening experiences. To learn more about this program visit www.tsa.gov/gotfeedback.

Flying Magazine - Gear Up

General DeWitt Spain airport has been named the official winner of the "Best Bargain, Best Help" award, a fictional award created by Flying Magazine reporter Dick Karl in his June article on "The Royal Treatment" offered by Fixed Base Operators (FBO) around the country.

At the beginning of the year, Karl spent two months flying to FBOs around the country to identify which ones offered first-class treatment and which did not. In his article, Karl called the employees of General Dewitt Spain "spectacular," and that the FBO "excelled." This rave review is not a surprise to employees of this general aviation airport, because they make a habit of raising the bar when it comes to serving the needs of those who use their facilities.

Pinnacle Airlines' Horse of the Blues

As part of the 60th anniversary celebration of the Germantown Charity Horse Show, Pinnacle Airlines sponsored an ornamental horse which they were able to paint with the design of their choice. The airline partnered with local artist Ellen Cox to turn the life-sized, 230lb horse into a music-themed Horse of the Blues. Pinnacle asked Cox to showcase a Pinnacle airplane, music and Beale Street on the horse. The artwork on the horse took six weeks to complete.

The Horse of the Blues is one of 17 horses sponsored by local businesses, clubs and individuals currently on display throughout the Greater Memphis area, at shopping centers, city parks and other public spots. Passengers travelling through Memphis International Airport can admire the beautiful artwork on the horse in the passenger connector outside the NWA World Club. The horse will be on display through October when it will be auctioned off for charity.
